For a fine dining experience, visit Penfolds Magill Estate. Home to Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange, it’s just eight kilometres east of the city centre. Take a tour or enjoy a cellar door tasting while you are there. Other great city dining experiences include Alphütte, Rigoni’s, Pranzo, Apothecary and The Manse.
Sweet island treats
Be sure to visit one of the many honey producers on Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island is home to the purest strain of bee in the world, the Ligurian bee. Declared a Ligurian Bee Sanctuary in 1885, Kangaroo Island’s bees originally came from the Italian province of Liguria.
Selected bakeries sell the popular Balfours’ frog cakes. Balfours is the largest fresh bakery in Australia and its colourful cream and sponge frog cakes are a hit with children and adults. Wash them down with a Farmers Union Ice Coffee. With a history of outselling Coca Cola in South Australia, Farmers Union Ice Coffee is one of the state’s biggest brands.
South Australia is aquaculture central. The best oysters, crayfish, snapper, tuna and prawns come from the local waters. Ask for the local, seasonal seafood when ordering you meal.
For the trip home, be sure to visit Maggie Beer’s Pheasant Farm in the Barossa. Indulge yourself with delicious tasting platters, ice cream, jams and pâtés.
