Tours and Self-Drive Holidays
On the open road
The best way to explore South Australia is on a driving holiday. Go it alone or hitch a ride with a tour group. The main thing is to travel at your own pace and enjoy the ride.
The roads are open and the rides are spectacular. From the four wheel drive (4WD) tracks in the desert, to the amazing coastal drive along the Melbourne to Adelaide Touring Route or the treeless expanse of the Nullarbor, South Australia was made for the touring driver.
For those looking for an adventure in the outback, there are legendary tracks like the Oodnadatta Track, Strzelecki Track and Birdsville Track. Travel along the Explorer’s Way and get a real taste of the outback with brilliant blue skies, rusty red dirt and the spirit of adventure to guide you. Take a map too!
Take the coast road
Coastal driving is a breeze in South Australia. Windows down, salty sea wind through your hair and a sprinkling of sand through your toes means you’re on a seaside holiday! Feel yourself unwind as you drive along the Fleurieu peninsula and Limestone Coast towards Melbourne, vineyards streaming alongside and the ocean looming toward you.
Cruising through the countryside of the Adelaide Hills, Barossa or Clare Valley will take you past fields of bright yellow canola, grazing cows and stone ruins. There’s a joyful simplicity in stopping in at country bakeries, where the food is real and the people are too.
Head to the Adelaide Hills for a relaxing day -. Our locals have put their heads together and come up with the Classic Country Drive, so you’ll find all the good bits.
You’ll find award-winning restaurants, cosy cafés serving seriously good coffee, cellar doors showcasing our world-class wines, art galleries, antique shops and animal sanctuaries. There is even the world’s biggest rocking horse!
If you want a helping hand or just want to relax, there are loads of different tour options. There are tour groups where all you have to do is turn up. There are also self-guided tours, such as The Fleurieu Way, which comes equipped with a map and plug-in GPS guide. There’s even an app for your iPhone if that suits you better.
Whatever route you take, you’ll be guaranteed sensational views, great food, wine and plenty of memories.
