Murray River, Lakes and Coorong Towns

A mighty history

The riverside towns along the Murray River are as diverse as this magnificent waterway, one of the world’s great rivers.

Fishing on the jetty, Mannum, South Australia

Winding through South Australia, the Murray River’s townships are a blend of country towns and rural cities. The locals will happily point out the best fishing and camping spots or the best time of day to see the spectacular wildlife.

Along the river

Along the Murray River, you’ll find townships like Blanchetown, informal places full of shacks and holiday homes. The Murray River is bustling over summer, visitors flock to the aquatic playground that is Lake Bonney.

City and larger towns

If you want somewhere a little busier, then head to Murray Bridge, Berri or Renmark. The Murray River is their lifeblood but with large shops, accommodation, restaurants, sporting facilities and pubs.

Speaking of pubs, to really quench your thirst, head to Overland Corner and visit one of South Australia's most quirky and historic hotels. You won't find another one like it!

Mannum is the birthplace of the paddle steamer. Waikerie is the centre of the fruit and citrus industry.

In the Mallee

If you’re in the Mallee, drop into Pinnaroo and Lameroo. Karoonda is another local hub and once a traditional winter camp for the local indigenous people.

Pinnaroo is more than 240 kilometres (150 miles) from Adelaide but a mere 5 kilometres (3 miles) from the Victorian border. On the way, you'll pass Tailem Bend, a handy place for a break. Not as busy as Murray Bridge, it's well located as a gateway to the Limestone Coast.

Stay a while

The area around Swan Reach is renowned for Big Bend, the tallest cliffs along the entire length of the Murray River.

If you visit Loxton or Lyrup, grab some fresh fruit for lunch. You’ll find some perfect places to throw down a picnic rug.

For something more adventurous, don’t miss the Monash Adventure Park!

Murray River, great people - strong communities.
