Cycling
See more of South Australia by bike. It’s a cycling haven, with sealed paths, off-road trails and on road bikeways. Cycle from the city to the beach, through wineries or the outback.
Visit in January and you may see some of the world’s best cyclists at the Santos Tour Down Under. It’s the only UCI WorldTour race in the southern hemisphere and it attracts cycling fans from all over the world.
From the hills to the beach
If you are staying in Adelaide, hire a bike from one of the many Bike SA depots. Bike hire is free. They will also throw in a helmet and bike lock.
Head to the Linear Park bike track, down by the River Torrens. The track is a sealed, off-road path, stretching 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the city to Henley Beach. Follow the river, as it winds its way to the beach. It will take you through beautiful bushland, past wetlands and horses in riverside paddocks.
There are plenty of places to stop along the way, including playgrounds for the kids and barbecues. When you reach the beach, you will arrive at Henley Square. Stop for lunch or coffee at one of the many cafés and restaurants. Lock up your bike and stroll along the sand.
Cellar door rides
Ride past rows of vines in the Clare Valley, Barossa or McLaren Vale. From short, one day tours, to extended expeditions, a fully guided tour will introduce you to the area’s cellar doors. Sample some of the best wine and delicious produce. It’s the perfect reward after a long day on the road.
Hill climbs
Serious road cyclists ride from the city to Mount Lofty Summit. This sealed road is popular with local cyclists, who challenge it every weekend. In the morning, mist hangs over the hills and eucalyptus sweetens the air. A similar challenge is Norton Summit Road. The road will take you above the rooftops, up through the clouds and into the hills.
Head off-road
For an adrenalin rush, go downhill mountain biking at Eagle Mountain Bike Park, Mount Lofty. Less than half an hour from the city centre, it will get your heart racing. The park has hosted the Australian Mountain Bike Championships and is the perfect place to practice your skills.
Cyclists love the Flinders Ranges. Local organisations have designed mountain bike tracks that mix nature with dirt and adrenalin. Ride across the red earth, dense bushland and down rocky mountain trails. It’s the best way to see the local wildlife and enjoy the outdoors. The town of Melrose is mountain bike central, with single track in the foothills of Mount Remarkable.
Get off the beaten track and make cycling part of your next holiday to South Australia.
